Samir Auf was born in Al-Qal’a district in Cairo in January 1941. He graduated from the Academy of Arts, the High Institute of Cinema, after studying film directing in 1965. He started his artistic career as an assistant director for several filmmakers including Kamal El Sheikh in 1965 in Al-Mukharboon, Tawfik Saleh in 1955 in Al-Motmardon, and Shadi Abdel Salam in 1969 in The Mummy. He joined the team to manage programs and television documentary films in the Egyptian television from 1966 to 1985. He participated several times as the chairman and member of the jury of several short and documentary films competitions, in several local and international festivals. Auf worked as a lecturer in documentary film at the Egyptian Television Institute, and was honored at the National Festival of Egyptian Cinema. A book documenting his life, called Samir Auf: Traveler to the Self, was published in 2002.
